A free Unreal alternative for people who do not need a film renderer
By Eduardo Orellana · Updated
Flockbay is free, and so is its AI: every account gets free AI each day on the hosted model, called Demo. When the free usage for the day runs out, it comes back the next day. You can also build on your Claude plan (Pro or Max) or your ChatGPT account (any plan, Free included) in the app, your own agent over MCP, or your own API key, and you pay the company that runs your model, never Flockbay. The download, the editor, Play and export are free. Pictures and sound run on the free AI. A 3D model uses your own Tripo key. Flockbay has no paid plans. Windows today. The engine is the official Godot release. Unreal is free to use and takes a royalty once your game earns well, which is a fair deal almost nobody triggers. The reasons to look elsewhere are usually weight, hardware and the fact that it expects you to program in C++.
AppImage, x86_64. Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 39 or newer.
Intel or AMD Chromebook, with Linux turned on.
What Unreal is unambiguously better at
Rendering. Nothing else gives you a scene that looks that good with that little effort, and if visual fidelity is the point of your game, Unreal is the correct answer and this page is not going to argue with it.
It is also free to download and use, with a royalty that only applies after your game has earned a substantial amount. Most people never reach it. Calling Unreal expensive is not accurate.
Its scale is real too. Large worlds, cinematic tooling, and a pipeline that studios use in production. That capability exists and it is available to you.

What it costs in practice
Weight. The editor is large, the installs are large, the projects are large, and a modest laptop has a bad time. If your machine is not powerful, you will spend more of your day waiting than building.
And the programming. Blueprints are Unreal's visual scripting and they are the most credible implementation of the idea anyone has shipped. They are still programming, in a notation with fewer teachers, and a complex Blueprint graph is famously hard to read even for the person who made it. Past a certain size you are pointed toward C++, which is a serious language.
So the free is real and the cost is your time and your hardware. For someone who wants a game rather than a career in engine work, that is the wrong shape of bill.

The trade Flockbay offers instead
Godot underneath, which is open source, light, and starts in seconds on ordinary hardware. It will not out-render Unreal and nobody should claim it will. It will run your world comfortably on a machine you already own.
And no programming, of either kind. Flockbay writes GDScript inside your project when you describe the behaviour you want. No Blueprint graph to maintain, no C++ to graduate into, and no visual notation to learn before you can express an idea.
You build the world by hand in the builder. Which builder you get is settled before anything is created: a new project asks 2D or 3D, with the answer read from your description of the game and yours to change. On the 3D side that is terrain, water, weather, buildings and characters. On the 2D side it is tile ground you drag to lay and drag to erase, with sprites placed at an exact position, turn and size.
Then you play it and say what is wrong. That judgement loop is the working method, and not writing the code takes nothing away from your ability to say the light is bleak or the enemies are boring.
The practical facts
Flockbay is a desktop app for Windows that ships with Godot. The game runs locally when you press play — no streaming, no cloud render, no browser preview. Building needs an internet connection because the chat, asset generation and world data come over the network. Playing what you built does not.
Free to download, and the builder is free to use. Flockbay is free on your own AI: your Claude or ChatGPT plan, your own agent, or an API key. There is no royalty, no revenue share and no export gate.

When you should stay on Unreal
If the look is the product. A horror game whose whole effect is light and shadow, or an architectural piece, or anything where a screenshot is the pitch. Unreal will get you there faster and further, and it is worth learning for that reason alone.
If you already know Blueprints and are productive in them. Fluency is expensive to acquire and cheap to throw away by accident. Switching tools mid-project rarely pays back.
And if your team already runs an Unreal pipeline. Flockbay is a single-person desktop app with no seat pricing, no shared workspace and no pipeline integration, and it is not trying to be the centre of a studio.

Questions
- Is Unreal free?
- Free to download and use, with a royalty on revenue above a high threshold. Most projects never reach it, so cost is rarely the real reason to leave.
- Will my game look as good as an Unreal game?
- Out of the box, no. Unreal renders better than Godot and pretending otherwise would be silly. Godot looks good and runs on far more modest hardware.
- Are Blueprints not already no-code?
- Blueprints are visual programming, which is programming with a different notation. Flockbay writes real GDScript for you instead, so there is no graph to maintain.
- Does Flockbay take a royalty?
- No. There is no revenue share and no export gate.
- What hardware do I need?
- A Windows PC. Godot is much lighter than Unreal, which is one of the practical reasons to prefer it.
