A free 3D game maker, and what free usually hides in 3D
By Eduardo Orellana · Updated
Flockbay is free, and so is its AI: every account gets free AI each day on the hosted model, called Demo. When the free usage for the day runs out, it comes back the next day. You can also build on your Claude plan (Pro or Max) or your ChatGPT account (any plan, Free included) in the app, your own agent over MCP, or your own API key, and you pay the company that runs your model, never Flockbay. The download, the editor, Play and export are free. Pictures and sound run on the free AI. A 3D model uses your own Tripo key. Flockbay has no paid plans. Windows today. The engine is the official Godot release. In 3D, "free" is usually free until the moment you want to publish, or free with a logo on your title screen. This page says exactly what is free here and what is not.
AppImage, x86_64. Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 39 or newer.
Intel or AMD Chromebook, with Linux turned on.
The four ways 3D tools charge you
What a free AI game maker gives you is defined on that page.
The first is the export gate. The editor is free, and building a finished, distributable game is the paid feature. You find this out after a month of work.
The second is the watermark. Free tier games carry a logo, so free is really a trial with an indefinite length.
The third is the asset economy. The tool is free and every model, texture and sound you might use costs money in a store you can only shop in from inside the tool. In 3D this is the expensive one, because 3D games need far more content than 2D games do.
The fourth is credits. You get a number of AI generations a month and the number is set so that a real project runs out. Free stops being free somewhere around your second week.

Where our line is
Flockbay is free to download for Windows, and so is the AI. There is no export gate, no watermark, and no reduced engine. The engine is Godot, which is open source and free regardless of us.
Flockbay is free on your own AI: your Claude or ChatGPT plan, your own agent, or an API key. Flockbay builds from a library of ready-made objects, or with Godot's own shapes. Those run over the network and genuinely cost money every time, which is the honest reason the AI is yours to bring. Nobody gives away compute indefinitely, and anybody claiming to is funding it from somewhere you cannot see.
So: building the world with your hands is free with no asterisk, and the AI is Demo each day or your own Claude or ChatGPT. Nothing you have already made stops working if you stop paying for your AI.

What you get for nothing at all
A desktop app with Godot bundled, running 3D properly: terrain, water, weather, lighting, and a game that runs locally on your own machine at your own framerate. That last part is not a small thing. Free browser-based 3D tools exist and they are running your world inside a tab, which is why their example scenes are always small and flat.
You also get a real Godot project. If you stop paying, or stop using Flockbay entirely, the project is still a Godot project. That is a different kind of free than "free while you stay".
And what you actually do with it
You build the world by hand. Terrain shaped where you want it, a lake with the outline you drew, weather, buildings, characters. Direct control, because arranging a space is done by pointing at things.
Flockbay writes the code. You say what should happen and it writes GDScript inside your project. You do not read it unless you want to; you play the game and say whether it is right. Being non-technical means not writing code, not having no opinion.
Building needs an internet connection because the chat, asset generation and world data come over the network. Playing what you built does not.

Where the art comes from, which is the real 3D cost
A 3D game needs far more content than a 2D one and that is where budgets actually go. Flockbay builds from a library of ready-made objects, or with Godot's own shapes. The other honest sources are art you find or buy elsewhere and bring in, and geometry built directly, which costs nothing but your time.
Built geometry is underrated. A stylised world made of simple shapes you placed yourself can look deliberate and cohesive in a way that a pile of mismatched downloaded models never does, and it is free in every sense.
Terrain, water, weather and sky are part of the world rather than assets you have to source, so a large outdoor scene starts from something rather than from nothing.

Questions
- Is Flockbay really free?
- The download is free, with no export gate, no watermark and no reduced engine. Flockbay is free on your own AI: your Claude or ChatGPT plan, your own agent, or an API key.
- What happens when the AI trial on the free plan runs out?
- The builder keeps working: terrain, water, weather, placement, play and export. Demo is free each day and comes back the next day, or you build on your own AI. Everything you already built is untouched and still a normal Godot project.
- Do I have to pay to publish my game?
- Not to Flockbay. There is no export gate, and Flockbay takes no share of your sales. For Steam, the app prepares the store page and exports it as a .zip you upload in Steamworks yourself, free. Steam's own fee of US$100 per app goes to Valve.
- Is it a browser tool?
- No. It is a download for Windows, and your 3D game runs locally rather than in a tab.
- Do I need to know 3D modelling?
- Not to start. Terrain, water, weather and placement are built in the builder directly. Custom models are one source of art among several.
