Best free AI game maker: count the cost that is not money

By Eduardo Orellana · Updated

Flockbay is free, and so is its AI: every account gets free AI each day on the hosted model, called Demo. When the free usage for the day runs out, it comes back the next day. You can also build on your Claude plan (Pro or Max) or your ChatGPT account (any plan, Free included) in the app, your own agent over MCP, or your own API key, and you pay the company that runs your model, never Flockbay. The download, the editor, Play and export are free. Pictures and sound run on the free AI. A 3D model uses your own Tripo key. Flockbay has no paid plans. Windows today. The engine is the official Godot release. Every free tool in this category is charging you something. Usually it is not money, it is where your project lives and what you can do with it a year from now.

The bill arrives later

Free tools are not charity and it is not cynical to ask what they are getting. Sometimes it is a paid tier you will eventually want, which is fine and predictable. Sometimes it is your project living somewhere you cannot reach it, which is not.

The concrete version of this: you spend four months on a game. The tool changes its pricing, or shuts down, or changes what the free tier allows. What do you still have? If the answer is a link that no longer loads, the tool was expensive.

This is the axis to compare free game makers on. Not credits per month. Not how impressive the first output is. What you are holding at the end.

What you hold when you use this one

A Godot project. Ordinary files, in a directory on your disk, in the format used by an open source engine that thousands of games ship on. You can back it up, copy it to another machine, hand it to a programmer, or open it in Godot yourself.

The game runs on the copy of Godot bundled with the app, locally, on your computer. Nothing about playing it involves us. If Flockbay vanished tomorrow the project would still open and still run.

That is the strongest promise available in this category, and it is available because we did not build a proprietary format. The engine underneath is somebody else's open source engine and that is deliberate.

What free costs here, honestly

The download is free and the world builder is free to use. Flockbay is free on your own AI: your Claude or ChatGPT plan, your own agent, or an API key. Flockbay builds from a library of ready-made objects, or with Godot's own shapes. There is no different engine or better output to buy.

The metering exists because the chat and asset generation run over the network and cost real money per request. An unmetered free tier would either be a lie or a company that stops existing, and both of those end with your project stranded.

The other thing free does not buy is time. This is not a tool that hands you a finished game. You build the world by hand, you play it, you say what is wrong, and you go again. That work is yours.

The trades you are accepting

It is a desktop app for Windows. That means a download and an install, and it means it will not run on a phone, a Chromebook you cannot install on, or a locked-down school machine. Browser tools win on that specific point and there is no arguing them out of it.

It also means the game runs on real hardware, which is what lets a world have terrain, weather and a few hundred characters in it without becoming a slideshow. That is what the download buys.

And building needs an internet connection. The chat, asset generation and world data come over the network. There is no offline mode. Playing what you built needs nothing.

A short test before you commit

Whatever you are choosing between, ask the tool one question: where is my project stored and in what format. The answer takes a sentence and predicts most of the next year.

Then ask what changing one small thing looks like on day forty. Free is only cheap if you can still be working in it by then.

None of which means you should pick the tool with the best format and ignore whether you enjoy using it. A project you never open because the tool is unpleasant is stranded just as thoroughly. The format question is a filter, not the decision.

The cost of switching later

Assume for a moment you pick wrong. How expensive is it to move? In a tool with a proprietary format the answer is that you rebuild from nothing, and four months of work becomes a memory of what you decided.

In an open format the answer is that you keep the project and change the tool you point at it. That is not a hypothetical benefit. Tools in this category are young, and the odds that every one of them is still here and still priced the same in two years are not good.

This is why the format question outranks every feature comparison. Features you can wait for. A stranded project you cannot recover.

So use it as a filter. Rule out anything that would strand you, then choose between what is left on whether you actually want to spend your evenings in it. That second question is the one that decides whether the game gets finished.

Questions

Is Flockbay free to download?
Yes, on Windows. The download and the AI are free. Flockbay is free on your own AI: your Claude or ChatGPT plan, your own agent, or an API key.
Do I lose my game if I stop paying?
No. It is a Godot project in ordinary files on your own disk and Godot is free and open source.
Why is usage metered at all?
Because the chat and asset generation run over the network and cost money per request. Demo is free each day and comes back the next day. It is not unlimited.
Is there a version with better AI if I pay?
Demo is the hosted model, free each day. On your own AI, a stronger model is one you connect: your Claude or ChatGPT account’s models, or any model your API key reaches. Flockbay has no paid plans.
Does it work offline?
Building does not. Playing the game you built does.
